Republicans in Tennessee introduced a bill that aims to anybody born through artificial insemination illegitimate.

According to WMC, the bill HB 1406, which is sponsored by state House Representative Terri Lynn Weaver, is set to repeal TCA 68-3-306, the current Tennessee statute which says that anybody born through artificial insemination are the “legitimate” child of the mother’s husband.

The new bill states that it immediately “repeals statute that deems a child born to a married woman as a result of artificial insemination, with consent of the married woman’s husband, to be the legitimate child of the husband and wife.”

Weaver, along with 52 other GOP lawmakers, were involved in a same-sex marriage divorce last year that involved a custody battle over a child that was born through artificial insemination. The Republicans insisted that the lesbian wife of the child’s mother should not treated as a “legitimate” parent.
