San Antonio Mayor: “Poor People Should Blame Their Self Because They Aren’t In A Relationship With Jesus Christ”

During a speech earlier this month to the Christian Coalition, which succeeded the political group started by Pat Robertson, the mayor of San Antonio told attendees that she feels that poor people are responsible for their own situation.

According to the Huffington Post, Mayor Ivy Taylor was asked about her opinion on the “systemic causes of generational poverty.”

“Since you’re with the Christian Coalition, I’ll go ahead and put it out there that to me, it’s broken people,” the 46-year-old Democrat said. “People not being in a relationship with their creator and therefore not being in a good relationship with their families and their communities and not being productive members of society.”

Although Taylor admitted that as mayor she couldn’t address religious issues, she explained to the group that she tackled the problem through education.

“I am a born again Christian, a believer in Jesus Christ,” Taylor said. “I draw very heavily on that as far as the strength to do this job.”
