After the Southern Baptist Convention voted to condemn the ‘alt-right’ political movement recently at an annual convention in Phoenix, Arizona, the alt-right leader Richard Spencer responded by referencing Jesus and Paul and asked whether they even read the Bible.
Spencer tweeted: Jesus never complained about “racism.” Paul enjoined slaves to return to their masters. Have these fundies ever read their Bibles?
The Associated Press reports that convention voted to “decry every form of racism, including alt-right white supremacy as antithetical to the Gospel of Jesus Christ” and to “denounce and repudiate white supremacy and every form of racial and ethnic hatred as a scheme of the devil.”
The Southern Baptist Convention, which was formed in the 19th century and defended slaveholders, is the second biggest Christian organization in the U.S. after the Catholic Church and has been working hard to distance themselves from its racist past.
