According to the Houston Chronicle, a volunteer youth pastor from Texas was given life in prison for the sexual assault of several youths from his church.
Godkin, 48, told his victims that God was ok with what he was doing, abusing one female victim from the time she was 13-years until she turned 17.
“He would say lots of things about God being OK with it,” explained prosecutor Monica Cooper. She said that Godkin would point out passages from the Bible to describe the roles of men and women.
Members of the church were shocked to discover Godkin’s heinous actions. They described him as a good Christians, according to the prosecutor.
“People were shocked when they heard that that’s how he controlled both of his victims (by quoting Scripture),” Cooper said. “He’s the scariest kind of child predator because he’s the kind that is sitting next to you in church, and he seems like the nicest guy.”
During the sexual assault case, Godkin’s ex-wife testified that he was physically abusive toward her during their troubled 12-year marriage. She claims that she even went to talk to the church pastor about the situation, but nothing was done.
“One of the assaults occurred after she had gone to their pastor at church seeking help,” the district attorney’s office said. “By the time she arrived home, Godkin knew she had spoken to the pastor and beat her because of it.”
