During a court testimony on Friday, a North Carolina woman said she led about 30 parishioners from her church to beat a homosexual church member in an effort to “expel his demons,” according to Pink News.
Five members, including Sarah Anderson, of the Word of Faith church in North Carolina are facing assault charges in the beating of Mathew Fenner in 2013.
Anderson told the court that Fenner was “unclean and sinful,” after listening to 2-hour long verbal trashing of the man by the church’s minister. Minister Brooke Covington told Fenner that “God said there is something wrong in your life.”
Fenner said that Covington, who is charged with assault and kidnapping, called out his sexual orientation during the beating which was meant to “expel his homosexual demons.” The court listened as Fenner testified how he was blocked from leaving the church by members, who then slapped berated and chocked him.
“You can’t imagine the emotional toll this has taken on my life,” the 23-year-old Fenner said.
According to reports, this is not the first time members of the non-denominational church were accused of abuse.
